FibroScan: Procedure, Types and Uses
FibroScan is a device used to conduct non-invasive testing to measure liver stiffness and inflammation. FibroScan testing is often performed as an alternative to liver biopsy and other invasive tests. The device uses transient elastography to assess liver hardness and stiffness.
The purpose of a FibroScan test is to assess liver health. Your doctor may order a FibroScan test if you have a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis B or C, or alcoholic fatty liver disease or if they want to evaluate your risk of developing cirrhosis.
There are several advantages of FibroScan testing. It is non-invasive and can be completed in as less as 10 minutes. FibroScan tests can be repeated several times to monitor liver health.
Overview of a FibroScan Test
The first FibroScan test was performed in 2003. Since then it has become a popular tool for assessing the level of liver scarring. The device was developed by Echosens.
When performed by an expert, FibroScan is a safe procedure.
Various Types of FibroScan
- Standard FibroScan
- FibroScan with CAP
- FibroScan for pediatric patients
When choosing the right device, your doctor considers your body type and your health condition.
What is a FibroScan Test?
A FibroScan test is performed to assess liver health. If you have fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis or alcohol-related liver disease, your doctor may repeat tests at pre-determined intervals to monitor liver health.
During a FibroScan test, the patient lies on their back on an examination table with their right arm raised above their head. The doctor applies a water-based gel on the right side of the patient’s abdomen and places a handheld device on the skin over the liver. As the device is moved over the area, it sends sound waves into the liver.
FibroScan Testing Cost
FibroScan test price in Delhi typically varies between INR 6,000 and INR 7,000 depending on the location of the testing center, the provider’s fee, and whether the patient’s insurance policy covers the test.
Different FibroScan Types
A doctor may order a FibroScan test if they suspect you have fatty liver disease. Doctors also order FibroScan tests to monitor disease progression in people with liver disease. Here are some common types of FibroScan tests.
- Controlled attenuation parameter- Or CAP measures ultrasound signal attenuation for steatosis quantification
- Liver stiffness measurement- Or LSM measures the stiffness of liver tissue
Cost of a FibroScan Test
Some factors that can affect the cost of a FibroScan test include facility type (hospitals may charge more than a diagnostic center), the scope of the test (whether the test only measures liver stiffness or also generates CAP scores), and whether additional diagnostic tests or integrated services are required.
CAP/Combination of LSM and CAP
CAP is often used to assess the extent of fatty liver disease and find out which stage of liver steatosis the patient is in. LSM+CAP is used to assess both liver stiffness and fat content.
FibroScan Testing Appointments, Duration, and Waiting
- Procedure: You lie on an examination table and your doctor applies a water-based gel on your abdomen. As they place a transducer on your abdomen, the device sends waves to your liver. The speed at which the waves move is measured to assess the degree of stiffness.
- Patient movement: Your doctor may ask you to avoid moving and changing your position as any movement could lead to inaccurate results.
- Patient: specific detailing-Your doctor will brief you about any precautions you need to take before and after the test.
